The Luxury of Lounging

Diana Vreeland once deemed the Caftan as fashionable for the beautiful people.

THE LADIES WHO LUNCH & THE LADIES WHO LOUNGE
The flowing hostess gown in glorious colours, patterns, and fabrics exudes an exotic air of elegance, luxury, and even glamour. Basically a large swath of uncut fabric, it’s a dramatic statement-maker yet maintains a breezy, effortless ease about it. The caftan is the epitome of comfort and style. No compromise required.

LOUNGING IS A LOST ART
We’re busy, busy, busy. Or are we?
Loungewear is not a fashion category most modern women devote much thought, or closet space, to. It hardly even exists anymore. Sadly, it seems, athletic wear is now the popular fashion choice for both day and night. It even has its own moniker, athleisure.

ELEGANT LIVING ISN’T ABOUT MONEY
I have a sublime retro full-length black velvet lounger trimmed at the cuffs in blond mink. You don’t have to live in a chateau (although it would be nice) to be devoted to elegant living. Slipping into something out of the ordinary, even just occasionally, makes fashion, and life, more fun. But as Vreeland points out, your clothes should just be the icing on an interesting life:

I mean a new dress doesn’t get you anywhere; it’s the life you’re living in the dress, and the sort of life you had lived before, and what you will do in it later.
~ Diana Vreeland

Even fashion icon, Iris Apfel, admits she isn’t dressed-to-the-nines 24 hours a day. The 97-year-old model revealed her off-duty attire is an old bathrobe and her at-home beautification routine is simply moisturiser and red lipstick. Somehow I have the feeling that Iris’s idea of an “old bathrobe” is probably something that isn’t terry towel.

NOT OUT OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE
There are signs of a caftan comeback with some decidedly feminine designs.

MARCHESA NOTTE, Long Caftan with Ostrich Feathers s & Metallic Sequin Starbursts, Shopbop
RALPH & RUSSO, Crystal-embellished silk-chiffon gown, Net-A-Porter
MARCHESA, Embellished Lace Caftan, Moda Operandi
ZEUS+DIONE Phryne embroidered linen kaftan, Net-A-Porter
MARIE FRANCE VAN DAMME Boubou Kaftan, Net-A-Porter
MARCHESA Embellished tulle-trimmed silk Caftan, Net-A-Porter

To give the trend a try without a big investment, you could make your own. If you have any sewing ability at all, a caftan is a project even a novice can tackle. Cut out in the afternoon, it will be ready to wear by cocktail hour. Pattern makers like Vogue and McCalls have re-issued many fabulous vintage patterns. Alternatively, a thrift store will likely yield something retro-glam and suitably swishy.

YOUR OWN WORLD
In our fast-paced, social-media-saturated world, loungewear may just be the fashion antidote we need. Perhaps privacy is the ultimate luxury. What we wear behind closed doors is fashion at its most personal.

FROM THE RUNWAY
The Dolce & Gabbana ELEGANZA Fall 2019 Ready-to-Wear Collection featured swoon-worthy loungewear.

What do you wear when the world isn’t watching?
