Living Her Best Life

Iris Apfel is now 97.
The inimitable Iris is living her best life.

I have more posts about Iris on this blog over its three-year lifespan than any other icon. She is just so interesting, and inspiring, and busy! She’s unstoppable. And she’s having fun.

Wherever I go, I try to be happy. Remember you have to bring yourself along wherever you go.

Her latest project is Blue Illusion’s A Life in Colour campaign.

Iris has a profound and witty common sense:

Dress your age, although some people are old at 40 and others young at 80. But at a certain age, you shouldn’t wear miniskirts or too much make-up. Unless I’m being photographed, I only ever wear moisturiser and red lipstick. If you’re 75, nobody’s going to think you’re 32. People who lie about their age are dopey. And getting carved up and trying to make your face look years younger is so stupid. Your hands are a dead giveaway.

And bless you Iris for this fashion advice:

It’s very rude to go out in athletic wear. It should be confined to the gym. The word “appropriate” seems to be lost from the modern lexicon.

I love those two quotes and agree with them entirely! Don’t wear gym clothes out and about – they’re for the gym! And some people are old at 40 and others are young at a very old age. And oh yes, the hands are a giveaway. But I believe that however old your hands look wear bright nail varnish and chunky rings to draw attention to them – yay, bring it on!

She is such an inspiration. Especially in a time where youth is constantly celebrated and we’re made to fear and stop the aging process. I do hope I can embrace and learn to love the skin I am in as I get even older. And I certainly hope I’ll kill it in the fashion department if I make it to my 90’s!
