An Elegant Friendship

In writing the previous post, Audrey’s Lipstick, about Lisa Eldridge’s acquisition of Audrey Hepburn’s Cartier lipstick holder, I spent countless hours immersed in everything Audrey far beyond the scope of what I was writing about because she’s impossible not to adore. Plus I love—and share—her attitude to clothes:

Clothes are positively a passion with me. I love them to the point where it is practically a vice.

One of the aspects of Hepburn’s story that intrigues me was her elegant friendship with couturier Hubert de Givenchy spanning  40+ years. They were both young when they met, at the beginning of their careers, and she was his friend and muse.

His are the only clothes in which I am myself.
He is far more than a fashion designer, he is a creator of personality.
~ Audrey Hepburn

Although Hubert outlived Audrey by 25 years (1927-2018 /age 91 vs 1929-1993 / age 64), the Audrey effect lived on in Givenchy’s heart and in his design legacy.
