Just because you are of-a-certain-age, doesn’t necessarily mean you have dry skin. In fact, some older women combat pimples and wrinkles (So unfair!). Rich creams and lotions are simply not suited to your skin. Have you heard of squalane?
You might think that applying an oil is counter-intuitive if you have oily skin, but here’s one that is lightweight, non-greasy, and non-comedogenic. It’s by beauty-disrupter, The Ordinary, and sells for $7.90 CAD. To put this in perspective, Biossance Squalane (also 100% squalane) is $68 CD at Sephora.
Squalane is a super hydrator increasing softness, elasticity, and suppleness. It is a wonderful companion to retinols or Retin A, countering side effects of dryness or irritation. You can buffer with it as well by applying it after cleansing and followed up with your Rx Tretinoin. This layering does not diminish Retin A’s effectiveness in any way, and in fact, enhances it.
The good news is squalane is suitable for all skin types. Since this one by The Ordinary is 100% pure, colourless, and odourless, it’s soothing for sensitive or chapped skin and healing for skin conditions such as eczema, dermatitis, and psoriasis.
Squalane absorbs lickety-split into the skin and you only need a drop or two for your entire face. I run the residue left on my hands through my hair, and often dab some on my lips, cuticles, or anywhere dryness is an issue.
Think of Squalane as a quenching drink of hydration for your skin.
If you’ve tried it, tell me in the comments what you think.
