A Finer Line

A Finer Line

Eyeliner tends to be an underdog in the makeup bag: a ubiquitous stick rolling around somewhere at the bottom, the sharpener already lost. It’s a staple that doesn’t usually garner much notice or devotion, being overshadowed by more eye-catching products like dreamy highlighters in shiny, covet-worthy compacts.

But here is a luxe eyeliner by Marc Jacobs worth paying attention to. It’s a gel liner in a convenient crayon format that comes in a wide range of rich mattes and shimmer finishes. This is an eyeliner to love.

The long-wearing formula is very versatile —precise for the waterline and tight-lining; smudgeable for a smoky eye, and can even be layered for more dimension.

Did I mention the sleek and sexy packaging?

I hadn’t really given much consideration to eyeliners until I watched celebrity makeup artist and Max Factor UK Ambassador, Caroline Barnes, use this one on YouTube for the prettiest of looks.

I sometimes get stuck in a nude eye rut, ignoring the other luscious shades in my palettes because I’m not sure what to do with them. This Speed Beauty Rose & Berry tutorial is my makeup game-plan for the holidays. It’s so beautifully soft and subtle, and wearable. Best of all, it suits women-of-a-certain-age.

The challenge with makeup for mature women, is adding definition to the face without looking harsh. Ageing eyes can become hooded and appear smaller, so eyeliner brings back the focus to the eye itself. Brown (Out) is a gorgeous metallic shimmer that makes the eyes pop.

The liner glides on smoothly, doesn’t irritate my sensitive eyes, or pull my eyelid like some other pencils do. It’s waterproof and really doesn’t budge once its set, so you have to act fast if you want to smudge it out. Then you can forget about it because it doesn’t fade, melt, or move, and lasts until you take it off.

By the way, the pencil has a built-in sharpener. Clever! Here’s how to use it:

With Highliner, Marc Jacobs has elevated the status of eyeliner to exquisite.

I may need a few more. Jazz (Berry), perhaps.

What would Caroline say?
