The Whitney

The Whitney

I have acquired a (ahem, another) handbag.

One I feel is an icon in the making: the WHITNEY BAG by Max Mara.

Originally launched in April 2015 to commemorate the opening of the new Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, it represents a collaboration between Italian fashion house Max Mara and Renzo Piano Building Workshop. The museum—and the bag—were designed by Italian architect, Renzo Piano.

Our aim was to apply one of the most characteristic elements of the museum project – the façade – to the bag: hence the idea of the modular strips enveloping the exterior. We tried to maintain a simple, pure design, working only on the details by applying a creative use of technology and placing the accent on respect for the materials.

A limited edition collection of only 250 bags were created in a light blue-grey colour reminiscent of the metallic shade of the museum’s exterior. Branded with a numbered logo stamp inside, the collectible fashion accessory subsequently sold out. Profits from the sale of the purse were donated to the Renzo Piano Foundation, to finance the non-profit organisation’s cultural and educational projects and research activities.

To mark the one-year anniversary of the bag and building, Max Mara recently released the Anniversary Edition. Inspired by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, founder of the Whitney Museum, there are two exclusive versions–one with a decorative leaf motif and the other with a flower motif–in a new pearl beige shade. The limited series of 400 is sold out online and is available in selected boutiques globally and at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

The tote is Sculptural.

Sophisticated. The contrasting interior is red suede. The metal components echo the design of the stanchions securing the building’s tension cables. Carried with the double handles or slung over the shoulder with an adjustable/detachable 108 cm long strap.

I bought this buttery soft calfskin beauty in black.

Medium in size.

I also snagged the collector’s edition in blue-grey which is the size large. No photos, as it hasn’t arrived yet.

I just hope that in 20 years’ time, the bag is as much of an icon as this building.

~ Renzo Piano

I have little doubt that The Whitney is destined to become a classic.

In other words, an Icon.
