The Beauty Of The Bee

Candles are magical mood-makers. Light a pillar as dusk falls, and you’ve set a glowing scene for cocktail hour; ignite long tapers and your dining table is an elegant setting for whatever you are serving; even Mac & Cheese looks splendid by candlelight; soak in a bubble bath ringed by tealights for the ultimate in relaxation. But have you considered your candles?

If you are buying your candles in bulk or based on a decor colour or a particular scent, you might want to think twice. Paraffin candles are extremely toxic and actually pollute the air in your home.

Did you know that  bees must fly 150,000 miles to collect enough nectar to produce six pounds of honey just to secrete one pound of wax? That is why natural beeswax candles have been prized since ancient times. They may be more expensive than their petroleum-based counterparts, but they are vastly superior in every way.

Beeswax candles are 100% natural, are slow burning, and virtually dripless. They also emit a wonderful smell because they are naturally scented by the honey and floral nectar in the honeycomb. They burn stronger, longer, and brighter than paraffin candles–a beeswax candle emits a light of the same light spectrum as the sun–with no chemicals, toxins, artificial colours or fragrances. Beeswax is the only fuel that releases negative ions which naturally purify the air.

There is beauty in a bee.

The healing properties of honey have long been known and heralded. Enzyme- and mineral-rich honey is not only a superfood, it’s a super beautifier. Honey is turning up in cosmetics and skincare because honey has many beauty benefits:

  • ANTIBACTERIAL  Great for acne treatment and prevention and for purifying and clarifying the skin
  • RICH IN ANTIOXIDANTS  Excellent for anti-ageing
  • HUMECTANT  Attracts moisture from the air. Softens and nourishes and makes skin glow

Honey should be wild, raw and unpasteurized. Manuka Honey is especially potent. Honey can be used for cleansing, face masks, as an exfoliator, and to condition the hair.

And, as Winnie the Pooh knew, honey is just delicious.
