The Handbag Diaries

A vintage bag by LUCILLE de PARIS that is pure arm candy. Made of genuine alligator, this mini chain bag is the epitome of timeless elegance.

LUCILLE de PARIS is one of the top, most recognizable, and highly-coveted vintage designer handbag brands. Founded by Charles Hahn and Lucille A. Hahn, the family run-business began in France in the 1930’s as a bridal beaded purse manufacturer. Relocating to New York in the 1940’s, LUCILLE de PARIS competed with the leading French fashion houses like Chanel and Dior. They crafted luxurious handbags from only the finest skins and exotic hides. Their superb designs. stylish colours, and fine workmanship meant that the LUCILLE de PARIS line was certainly the equal to that of the top French brands. In fact, Lucille fervently believed that the French were not the only purveyors of style, and that, in fact, an American made luxury item was far superior.

LUCILLE de PARIS bags were sold at Saks Fifth Avenue, Crouch & Fitzgerald, Neiman Marcus, and Bergdorf Goodman. They could also be ordered by mail or by phone, for convenient delivery. They emphasized and advertised the fact that they manufactured their bags from American alligators, and even had the symbol of a reading alligator wearing a crown as part of their whimsical logo alongside the signature Lucille de Paris, and the ‘Made in USA’ mark.

In addition to in-stock collections, they also did custom-made creations for prestigious customers including celebrities, dignitaries, and royalty. The company was very successful until 1969, when the use of alligator skins was banned, thereby forcing the end of production.

LUCILLE de PARIS bags are sought after by collectors and fashionistas. Truly unique and beautiful.
